Yes, I did go see this movie. And it was actually better than I expected it to be. I thought they probably wouldn’t work too hard to make a good movie because the books were so wildly popular they could just make money off their success. While this was partially true, it wasn’t close to completely true, thankfully.

Maybe I’ll write my thoughts on the movie itself later (or maybe not…it depends on if I have good coherent thoughts about it), but in the meantime….

I can’t believe I’m about to do this, but I couldn’t help but note the similarities to another popular teen series:

Gale vs. Peeta and Jacob vs. Edward. That’s right.

Yes, I just made a comparison to Twilight. Please don’t hate me. I hate myself a little bit for even dragging them into this blog post.

Think about it: one girl, two guys. One is the tan, outdoorsy type who’s been friends with her since they were kids. The other is a slightly pasty (no pun intended!) guy who’s clever and different and new. Who will Bella/Katniss choose?

Ok, the similarities aren’t absolute (whew): Peeta is far more interesting and less creepy to me than Edward, and far less possessive. I actually liked Peeta’s character, instead of being disturbed. So that’s a plus.

Did anyone else notice similarities/ differences in these stories?

Most Hilarious Christmas Gift

I received some lovely gifts this year for Christmas, but by far the most entertaining was a small jar of bacon jam.

Yes, bacon jam.

This is real

This spreadable bacon may seem strange to you, but when added to scrambled eggs or spread on a toasted sandwich, it actually tastes pretty good. You have the bacon taste without the difficulty of the bacon falling out of the side of the sandwich. It is a little strange, and it is actually sweeter and less salty than I thought it would be (brown sugar is an ingredient), but it’s really not too bad. I wouldn’t eat it straight from the jar, but when added to something else (I hear it’s great on hamburgers), it adds a nice bacon flavor.

Let me know if you want to sample it, and I’ll see if I can whip up something that includes this ingredient.

Mostly I think what I enjoy about this bacon spread is thinking “I am eating bacon jam” to myself every time I take a bite. It’s funny every time.

Big News for the Continent

In breaking news today, scientists revealed that the Eastern Seaboard of North America and the tip of Europe (commonly known as the United Kingdom) have switched places in a rare continental shuffle. While residents of U.S. States had suspected it for some time, it was only today that leading geologists and meterologists went public with the information. This explains the cool and unusually rainy spring and summer the eastern United States has experienced this year, but the reasons for the sections of the two continents to exchange places has not yet become clear. It may be the first test of an exchange program between the two continents to experience other weather patterns–top scientists are working even now to discover more details about the fascinating switch. We will update you as soon as we have more news, including the latin scientific name for the continental shuffle which is currently under discussion.

At lunchtime I walked past the bathroom door and noticed this sign:

“Please do not flush any toilets after 1:30 p.m. today”

 

That’s ok. No one needs to use the restrooms in the afternoon anyway. Good thing.

Hazards of the Road

A few days ago as I drove home for my lunch break I noticed that there were a few places where wires or small cables of some sort had been taped to the road. The wires ran from the street all the way to a small box located in the median.

Why were there two sets of wires and small boxes on my commute? Dozens of cars would run over them in the course of a day. What if I were the 299th car to run over the wires and the boxes were rigged to explode at the 299th car?!

Someone told me that the wires and boxes are supposed to count the number of cars that drive down the road for upkeep purposes. But how easy would it be for someone to rig the little boxes?
